Irvine Townhouse

San Clemente, CA. Photographer: Amy Bartlam.  A lagoon, complete with geese and Koi fish, is the backdrop to this Irvine California townhouse.  Starting with a dynamic multi-level floor plan and utilizing the large windows we were able to brighten up the interior by opening the space removing unnecessary walls, installing oak floors, updating the layout and finishes throughout.  Contrast was added to the restrooms and entry with a dark grey paint and basalt herringbone tile allowing for a modern feel to the design.  Having lived in Beijing for 8 years and being Taiwanese themselves, the client brought a lot of their culture to the project furniture and accessories.   This juxtaposition brings about a playful yet culturally unique interior.

What makes for a more interesting combo than pairing modern design with cultural traditions?  This was the challenge we took on in this Irvine based townhome.  And boy, were we feeling the mix. The multiple levels of this home also made for a lot of wall space.  Rather than fill a blank wall with art, we opted to form beautiful geometry through paint and enhance the folds in architecture like origami.  We also removed walls to open up the space and utilize the large windows to brighten up the interiors.  Next, we installed oak floors, herringbone basalt tile, and painted throughout.  We'd be lying if we said we weren't giddy over this drastic transformation.
